Rebecca Witter was born with a lifelong passion for art. Rebecca has a degree in Art History and a Master of Architecture from the University of Florida. She has painted in acrylic and watercolor for over 40 years. Rebecca is also a self-taught seamstress and ceramicist. She loves the art of throwing clay, hand painting each piece with under-glazes that result in pottery dominated by bright floral and geometric designs. Ceramic art was influential in developing painting that incorporates form, pattern, and color. Rebecca’s work is most influenced by symbolist painter Gustav Klimt, and architect Frank Gehry.
Rebecca currently finds inspiration from haute couture fashion photography where women are captured dressed in elegant clothing, with exaggerated makeup resulting in compositions that blur the line between clothing and art. Rebecca finds fascination in translating the photographed women into diagrammatic layers of paint, tissue paper and crayons. Many of the patterns from Rebecca’s ceramics are used in mixed media paintings. Pattern has always been a part of Rebecca’s art.
Creating hand thrown painted pottery combines my love of painting with my love of clay. Everyone can love a beautiful functional piece of pottery. I think of my pottery as "art for the table" that enhances the pleasure of food. I have the good fortune of being able to do something I’m highly passionate about.
